History

At Cheam Park Farm, we provide an ambitious history education to help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. This inspires pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past and the impact on the present day. Learning equips pupils with the ability to critically analyse contrasting arguments and make interpretations of the past.

History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. By the time they leave primary school, pupils will have a coherent understanding of historical concepts and historical enquiry.

Our pupils build their historical schemata from the earliest opportunities and continue to build on their prior knowledge as they make their way through the school. For example, EYFS children will learn and understand about kings and queens (often through stories), children in KS1 will then build on this by learning about monarchy and then KS2 children will learn and understand what life was like in Tudor England. More details on our approach to history can be found via the progression map below, including how we prepare pupils for their KS3 journey.

Pupils are given the opportunity to develop and embed a sense of time, understand how civilisations were interconnected and to understand how some historical events occurred concurrently.

We spark children's curiosity about the past through exciting experiences like handling historical artifacts, meeting special visitors, attending workshops, and educational visits. Our goal is to give children a hands-on understanding of what life was like in different historical periods. We also use stories and books to broaden their knowledge and help them connect the past to their own lives.
