Who can parents and carers talk to about a child’s needs: the assess, plan, do, review cycle
In LEO Academy Trust all teachers are teachers of SEND and all leaders are leaders of SEND. We welcome children with a broad range of needs who may require adaptations, adjustments or support that is additional to or different from their peers.
If parents/carers have any concerns about their child’s needs, the class teacher is the first person they need to speak with.
Underpinning ALL our provision in school is the assess, plan,do review cycle:
All teachers are responsible for every child in their care, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
Assess: Children are continually assessed as part of a rigorous, whole-school monitoring approach. A variety of assessment techniques may be used, including observation of pupils’ learning; informal discussion with individuals or groups of pupils; asking questions to determine knowledge and understanding; looking at recorded work or conducting formal tests. Assessments may be carried out by teachers or teaching assistants, depending on the child’s needs.
Plan: If a child is falling behind the level expected for children their age or they are not making the progress expected, teachers are responsible for adjusting their own practice, according to the needs of the individual child. In addition to these adjustments, teachers may also decide to include pupils in more targeted interventions designed to give children more targeted support.
Do: While the class teacher is responsible for making adaptations to planning and adjustments to classroom practice, more specific interventions may be led by the class teacher or by a TA. Desired outcomes will be much more specific and differ according to the needs of the pupils.
Review: The effectiveness of the support and interventions and their impact on the child’s progress are reviewed regularly, along with the views of the child and parent(s)/carer(s).
Should concerns persist, parents/carers can speak with the school SENDCo (Naemi Newman), as well as other members of the leadership team (Emma Potter and Kelly Wight).
